  • ~20 lbs
  • Honeydew aka "Melon", "Bai-Mi-Gua", "白蜜瓜"
  • Honeydew is a round melon with smooth cream color thinned skin. The flesh is bright green with seeds and pulps in the center that is usually removed. The taste is very similar to cantaloupe but slightly sweeter and firmer texture. Honeydew is available year-round.
Handling Tip
Selection
  • Honeydew is firm without bruises and the surface feels waxy.
  • The blossom end, the opposite end of the stem, gives slightly when you press on it.
  • The fruit has a sweet, pleasant aroma.
Storage
  • Honeydew should be stored at 50ºF (10ºC) with a relative humidity of ninety to ninety-five percent and no mist.
  • The typical shelf life is three weeks for generally harvested honeydew. If the honeydew is induced to ripen with ethylene, it should be stored at 44.6ºF (7ºC) with a relative humidity of ninety-five percent and no mist. Ethylene-induced honeydew has a shelf life of seven to ten days.
  • Mature honeydew is sensitive to ethylene, a naturally occurring gas that regulates ripening. Mature honeydew should not be stored with high ethylene-producing products to extend shelf life. Honeydew produces a moderate level of ethylene.
  • Honeydew is sensitive to chilling injury at below 45°F (7ºC). Symptoms include pitting, discoloration of flesh, and failure to ripen. As the fruit ripens, it becomes less sensitive to chilling injury.
